Harley Benton Solid Uke Natural

Voor het geld een prima instrumentje waardoor ik toch nog wat 'nylon-achtige' akkoordjes en loopjes kan spelen. Een piëzo-element is nooit 'natuurgetrouw' maar gegeven de huidige omstandigheden (lees het gedeelte hieronder) is het voor mijn doeleinden goed genoeg... Ik zou deze Ukelele als 'geinig' willen omschrijven. Met een andere set snaren die een lage G heeft (standaard een hoge G) heb je een instrumentje waarmee je, zoals gezegd, wat akkoordjes en loopjes kunt inspelen. De 'sustain' van de snaren is niet ideaal. De tonen zijn eerder 'percussief', maar omdat alle snaren van nylon zijn (dus geen omwoelde snaren zoals bij een soortgelijke 'massieve' gitaar) is het klankresultaat heel redelijk...

Helaas leven we in een onrustige tijd dat je zomaar plotseling een groot aantal nieuwe buren krijgt toegewezen. Een politieke beslissing die géén NL-sprekende mensen huisvest, maar wel ten koste is gegaan van mijn jarenlange muziekpassie. Dit is 2025. Door voortdurende lawaaiprikkels en aanwezigheidsdruk is opnemen met microfoons vrijwel onmogelijk geworden (tenzij ik 'gillende kinderen' en hard dichtslaande deuren in alle opnamen voor lief neem...). Waar ik voorheen in dit gehorige huis bij elkaar tenminste negen albums 'probleemloos' heb opgenomen.

Dus heb ik noodgedwongen mijn akoestische gitaren verkocht en heb ik als alternatief eerst een HB Nashville gitaar aangeschaft. Helaas bleek de 'sustain' op de drie nylon snaren snel 'dood' te slaan. Bij het aanslaan van een akkoord bleven alleen de omwoelde snaren 'doorgonzen', hetgeen een onwerkelijke klank voortbracht. Totdat ik min of meer toevallig deze Harley Benton Solid Uke Natural tegenkwam. Inderdaad is het een geinig instrument dat voor mijn doeleinden net goed genoeg is en ook voor een redelijke prijs. Met draagtas en twee sets extra snaren (lage G) heb ik een gunstige aankoop gedaan. Goed genoeg voor wat 'nylon'-akkoorden en dito loopjes. Met dank aan de service en adviezen van de 'Nederlandse' helpdesk.

The ukulele was beautifully finished and looked great out of the box. Action was real high so I shimmed the nek and lowered the bridge then it played as a dream. The problem started when plugged. The G and especially the A strings were so incredibly soft compared to the C and E that to my disappointment, this beautiful ukulele was not usable and I sent I back. Thanks to Thomas’s great costumer service!

I have played a lot of electric ukuleles. This one isn't the most feature-rich, but honestly, it doesn't need to be. It's simple and does what it does very well, especially at this price point.

I love that the tone knob has a catch at 50%-- it almost gives the feeling of a pickup selector, and tones are genuinely usable all across the dial. Bottom it out and send it thru drive and it gets big and thick. Dime it out and put on some chorus and you get very plinky cleans, as close to "sparkly" as nylon strings are gonna get.

I did have to make a few tweaks to get this up to my standards, but none of them cost me any money. The action was very high out of the box, so I shimmed the neck to lower it, and it's great that that's even an option thanks to the neck being bolt-on. If this were a one-piece uke, that would have been a fatal issue for me. I also needed to tighten the nuts on the volume and tone knobs, but that took all of 10 seconds. Finally, I find it extremely difficult to get the battery out of the battery box, to the point I suspect I have to be doing something wrong with it.

Overall, this is an extremely playable and useful instrument being sold at half of what I'd pay for it. Helped convince my band to let me add some uke to the set 🤘
