Traditional Tibetan singing bowls are typically made from a bronze alloy. The Thomann Crystal series offers a modern reinterpretation, using ultra-pure crystalline quartz which preserves the fundamental sonic character of its metal predecessors. A gentle tap or light circular motion produces an airy, sustained tone centred on a precise fundamental, enriched by shimmering harmonic overtones. Moreover, this reimagined design benefits from a specialised manufacturing process, yielding extended sustain and exceptional clarity that surpass many traditional bronze models.
Thomann Crystal Singing Bowls are available in sizes ranging from 8" to 22" and in a variety of tonal keys. Each bowl is defined by its fundamental note and tuning frequency - either 440Hz or 432Hz. The model name reflects the primary pitch, while tuning is discussed in more detail below. Several finishes are offered: The milky Classic Frosted, a fully transparent version, the coloured Internal Frosted Color, and a premium gold-plated option with a fine 24-carat coating. Some bowls include a cylindrical handle at the base (Thomann Crystal Handle), allowing for handheld use rather than the traditional placement on a surface.
While crystal bowls can certainly be used in musical settings to evoke a mystical atmosphere, they are most often associated with relaxation, wellness, and meditative practices. These instruments are widely used in sound therapy and are believed to support calm and clarity across mind, body, and spirit. Thomann Crystal Singing Bowls are well suited to therapeutic sound journeys, yoga sessions, or simple relaxation at home. In general, larger bowls produce deeper and more expansive resonance, enhancing the immersive quality of the sound.
In addition to products from more renowned companies, Thomann now also dedicates a large proportion of its range to instruments that bear the store’s own brand name and are manufactured by well-known and long-established companies. These include percussion instruments – from shakers and cajons through to handpans and drums authentically made in Africa – that offer an unbeatable price-performance ratio and are the perfect choice for students, beginners, and many others. These are characterised by features and materials normally found at much higher price points as well as by a thoroughly convincing sound.
Each bowl comes with a stabilising silicone ring and a mallet tailored to its size and weight, which maximises resonance. Bowls can be played individually or combined with others in complementary keys, allowing harmonics to be layered seamlessly. To further expand the sonic palette, the singing bowls pair naturally with Thomann Wuhan Tam Tam or Tam Gong gongs for an even richer experience. For safe transport, the optional Thomann Crystal Bowl Carry Bag is precisely fitted, offering reliable protection for both the instrument and its accessories.
The Thomann Crystal Singing Bowls are available in two tunings: 440Hz and 432Hz. These refer to the reference pitch "A" from which the rest of the bowl's notes are derived. The 440Hz version aligns with the international concert pitch standard established in 1939, making it easy to integrate with other instruments. The 432Hz model, tuned 8Hz lower, does not align with conventional tunings and is best used solo or with other instruments set to this fundamental. Both versions offer distinct listening experiences depending on user intention and context.
